Overview

What Is Software?

Software ranges from the operating systems that run devices to the business applications people use every day. It may be installed on a computer, accessed through a web browser, or delivered as a subscription service hosted by a provider.

Every piece of software has a lifecycle: it is planned, built, tested, released, and then maintained with updates and fixes for as long as it is in use.

Software as a Service

Applications hosted by a provider and accessed online, usually by subscription.

APIs

Application Programming Interfaces let different software systems exchange data and functions.

Open Source vs. Proprietary

Open-source code is publicly available to use and modify; proprietary software is owned and licensed by a vendor.

Updates & Patches

Regular updates add features and fix bugs and security vulnerabilities.

Integration

Connecting applications so information flows between them without manual re-entry.
